  Our Paralegals

Smith Debnam’s practice management philosophy seeks to effectively and prudently delegate and leverage our work process to the extent possible. This approach serves to provide our paralegals with substantive opportunity to gain meaningful experience and take on significant responsibility in supporting the practice of law by our attorneys. We provide our paralegal staff with the training and technology to support effective communication, document production, and access to information resources.

“I have been with the firm for over 15 years and they have allowed me to switch practice areas several times in order for me to continue to be challenged by my work. I feel that I work 'with' my attorneys not 'for' them. We are a team, in which each member is valued for their contribution. I also enjoy the regular firm-wide functions the firm hosts, such as holiday parties, Family Day, Paralegal Week and Staff Appreciation Week.”
Joann, Paralegal – Construction Law and Equipment Leasing

Our paralegals are encouraged to participate in activities to continually expand their legal and professional knowledge, including obtaining Certified Paralegal status with the NC State Bar. The firm provides for each paralegal’s continuing legal education requirements, and offers other skill-based training opportunities.

We promote teamwork among staff, paralegals and attorneys in order to best meet the needs and expectations of our clients. In recognition of the critical role our paralegals play, we dedicate one week each year to acknowledge and celebrate the commitment and client service they provide. During Paralegal Appreciation Week we provide events, gifts and other special recognition to convey our appreciation for the professional efforts of our paralegals.

"In the nearly 15 years I have worked at Smith Debnam, I have determined that paralegals are a vital part of the practice of law. I deal with the clients and opposing attorneys. I draft pleadings and letters, which are then reviewed by the attorney. I really enjoy the professional challenges a paralegal position at Smith Debnam has provided."
Julie, Paralegal - Creditors’ Rights - Commercial

To hold a paralegal position with our firm requires a candidate to possess a 4-year degree, a paralegal certificate, or equivalent prior experience in the paralegal field. Previous experience in a given law practice type may also be required.
