As Smith Debnam’s Chief Operating Officer, Gilman oversees the firm’s financial and operational aspects, including finance and accounting, human resources, information systems, marketing, facilities support, strategic planning, and risk management. With over 40 years of experience—20 of which have been in legal management—Brian has consistently demonstrated a commitment to operational excellence and strategic innovation.
Gilman’s leadership in the legal industry extends far beyond the firm. He is a Certified Legal Manager (CLM) and has served on the Board of Directors for the International Association of Legal Administrators (ALA), the Board of Trustees for the Foundation of ALA, and as President of the ALA Raleigh-Durham Chapter. He has also contributed to the North Carolina Bar Association’s (NCBA) Law Practice Management Council, focusing on groundbreaking initiatives such as the Transitioning Lawyers Commission. Gilman has advised the broader business community outside the legal sector through service on the Truist Wholesale Payments Client Advisory Council and the Midtown Raleigh Alliance Board of Directors.
