Raleigh, N.C. (January 13, 2021) – Michael Denning, an accomplished jurist and former District Court judge for Judicial District 10 in Wake County, North Carolina, has joined Smith Debnam’s mediation and arbitration practice group in Raleigh after having served nearly ten years on the bench, six of which as a Family Court judge.
Denning was elected to the District Court Bench in 2010, where he served as a Family Court judge, presiding over custody and family law matters and regularly presiding over Civil District Court. At Smith Debnam, Denning will focus his mediation and arbitration practice in the area of family law and civil litigation, including negotiating marital settlements and representing individuals in divorce and separation proceedings to resolve child custody and child support disputes, post-separation spousal support and alimony disagreements, and property division disputes. His focus will also include pre-marriage estate planning and drafting of pre-nuptial agreements.
A 10-year veteran of the United States Marine Corp, Denning enlisted after high school and served in multiple locations overseas, including China, Mongolia, Japan, Indonesia, Somalia, and Haiti.
“Judge Denning is a distinguished jurist with an impeccable record of service throughout his career,” said Smith Debnam Managing Partner Jerry Myers. “From his ten years of military service as a U.S. Marine to his tenure serving on the Tenth Judicial District Court bench, he has amassed insight and perspective that will greatly benefit our clients. We are honored to have him join our firm.”
Denning is a certified family financial mediator through the North Carolina Dispute Resolution Commission and a North Carolina State Bar and Wake County Bar member. Denning is admitted to practice in all North Carolina State Courts and U.S. District Court in all North Carolina Districts.
“I’ve long admired the caliber of attorneys at Smith Debnam and the firm’s reputation for excellence,” says Denning. “My time in the Marine Corps drove home the tenet that integrity above all is determinative, and that’s the standard the attorneys and staff at Smith Debnam set for themselves every day. I’m glad to be here, and I look forward to seeing what this next chapter has in store.”
Denning graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with degrees in English and medieval history. He earned his J.D. from Campbell University’s Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law.
